Michael A. Muller

Michael A. Muller is a multi-instrumentalist and producer based between Los Angeles and New York City. He’s best known for his two decades of music with Balmorhea, his solo work as a film composer, and his early solo material namely released on Deutsche Grammophon.

His compositions weave contemporary electronic elements with traditional orchestration, creating musical landscapes that obscure the boundaries between past and present. This versatility has resulted in projects including narrative films, scores for brands and site-specific curations for institutions.

In 2024, Muller co-composed the film Things Will Be Different with Jimmy LaValle of The Album Leaf, which premiered at SXSW. His most-recent feature score of Jared Hogan’s Jackrabbit premiered at 2026’s Oldenburg Film Festival. Muller has also created bespoke music for advertisements and short films for Adidas, Filson, Lululemon, Stone Island, 6-hour compositions for a sleep device by Hatch, and a real-time, half-marathon score for Tracksmith.

Muller's recorded work focuses on the liminal plane where sound shapes consciousness—investigating the intrinsic ways music transforms space, time and human connection. This ethos garnered him a curatorial role with hi-fi designer Ojas, both programming and operating listening room exhibitions between London’s 180 Studios, Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in NYC, Karimoku Research Center in Tokyo, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Muller co-founded Ojas Music, an analog-only record label, with Ojas’ Devon Turnbull in early 2026.

Muller has a wide gamut of musical compatriots, touring partners and collaborators ranging from artists such as Joep Beving, CJ Camerieri, Masayoshi Fujita, Nailah Hunter, Clarice Jensen, Chuck Johnson, Doug McCombs, Oathbreaker, Víkingur Ólafsson, Alva Noto, Hania Rani, Otto A. Totland, and Spencer Zahn among many others.

Visual identity bears a crucial role amid Muller’s sonic works. He has partnered with an extensive group of filmmakers, painters and photographers between his album’s artworks, videos and press imagery including Matthew Genitempo, Ron Jude, Peter Liversidge, Ray Meeks, Awoiska van der Molen, Rich Stapleton and John Zabawa among others.

His music has been featured and reviewed by Aquarium Drunkard, BBC, Fact, KEXP, and The Absolute Sound; with notable editorial playlist inclusions on Amazon Music, Apple Music and Spotify.
