Lamplight

New Album: Lick The Spoon, Let It Soften

“How long do I have?” is the first line Ian Williams sings on his sophomore album as Lamplight. Before we are introduced to what has been lost or gathered, Lick The Spoon, Let It Soften, begins with a question. It could sound like fear, but in the songs, possible limitations are stretched until they become something not tiptoed around. Williams traces this idea by pointing out scattered objects. A kettle, a bed, a...

Yr Knives

Debut Album: Begin Yr Singing

Yr Knives began somewhere off to the side of itself. The Chicago composer and arranger Paul Karner had an idea he couldn’t shake: he wanted two very different guitar voices, playing parts that seemed unrelated on paper, brought together on a recording of his own music. He asked Andrew Trim and Brian J Sulpizio. The two were already friends and collaborators, usually with Sulpizio engineering Trim’s other projects,...

Wilder Maker

New Album: Smoking the Bunny

Smoking the Bunny is the second in a planned trilogy of records by Brooklyn based avant-indie outfit Wilder Maker. It is sonically and conceptually ambitious, expansive, groovy, poetic, cinematic –– both strange and familiar. At times, this episodic record sidles alongside Broadcast or Oren Ambarchi or Tortoise, at others Ry Cooder or Paul Simon. Aesthetic juxtapositions are the order of the day but nothing here...

henry o henry

Dublin-born, thirty years an immigrant. That's the spine of henry o henry's debut, Apocrypha, not as a concept but as a condition. "Ireland is the DNA of the thing," he says, "the thing before every other thing." He's spent three decades in the United States working in the trades, absorbing the country's mythologies, imagining Whitman's American spirit, and building what he calls "an idiosyncratic American language"...

Art Feynman

New Album: Orphans

Slow, unfussy, and largely instrumental, Orphans finds Art Feynman turning inward. Conceived as “music to do other things by,” the album is designed to live alongside daily activity, coloring the atmosphere without demanding focused attention. It moves through a space like wind chimes, less something to follow than something to feel. These are intimate, solitary explorations, sketches that feel less composed than...
